18 september Ceremonie AARON woon zorgcomplex
De herdenking bij Aaron op 18 september 2025 was opnieuw een indrukwekkend samenzijn vol betekenis en verbondenheid. Anja Adriaans, oprichter van Stichting FAN opende de bijeenkomst, zij bracht de groeten over van de familie Cook die dit jaar niet aanwezig konden zijn.
Als eerste spreker nam Inge van de Sande, directeur Beschut en Beschermd Wonen bij ZZG Zorggroep, het woord. Daarna volgden toespraken van wethouder Grete Visser namens de Gemeente Nijmegen en BG Henry Llewelyn-Usher namens de 82nd Airborne Division. Ieder vanuit hun perspectief benadrukten zij het belang van herdenken: niet alleen om stil te staan bij het verleden, maar ook om verbinding te maken met de toekomst.
Een bijzonder accent lag bij Jasper Weerkamp van Talis, eigenaar van het woonzorggebouw Aaron. Hij werd bedankt voor de rol van Talis in het bewaken van de historische betekenis van deze plek, die tegelijk een warm thuis biedt aan bewoners.
Het gebed van Chaplain Turpin van de 82nd Airborne Division bracht bezinning en stilte, terwijl de aanwezigheid van de Color Guard en de indrukwekkende zang van het 82nd Chorus zorgden voor een waardige omlijsting. Er werden bloemen gelegd bij de plaquette van Julian Aaron Cook door wethouder Grete Visser, US Army Attache COL. Mark Sturgeon namens de US ambassade in Den Haag en BG Llewelyn-Usher namens de 82nd Airborne Division.
Na de officiële ceremonie volgde een gezellige bijeenkomst in de huiskamer waar het 82nd Chorus samen met de bewoners diverse liederen, ook verzoeknummers zong. Een ontroerend slot dat de herdenking extra bijzonder maakte.
De dag liet zien hoe verleden en heden elkaar raken: met respect voor offers uit het verleden en met de overtuiging dat herdenken mensen verbindt. Het was een plechtige, maar ook warme en hoopvolle herdenking waar Nijmegen trots op mag zijn. Trots mogen ook Martine Gaal en de bewoners van het Aaron gebouw zijh.
18 September – Ceremony at AARON Residential Care Complex
The commemoration at Aaron on 18 September 2025 was once again a deeply moving gathering filled with meaning and connection. Anja Adriaans, founder of Stichting FAN, opened the ceremony and conveyed greetings from the Cook family, who were unable to attend this year.
The first speaker was Inge van de Sande, Director of Sheltered and Protected Living at ZZG Care Group. She was followed by addresses from Alderman Grete Visser on behalf of the Municipality of Nijmegen and BG Henry Llewelyn-Usher on behalf of the 82nd Airborne Division. Each, from their own perspective, emphasized the importance of remembrance: not only as a moment to reflect on the past but also as a way to connect with the future.
A special highlight came from Jasper Weerkamp of Talis, owner of the Aaron residential care building. He was thanked for Talis’s role in safeguarding the historical significance of this location, which at the same time offers a warm home to its residents.
The prayer by Chaplain Turpin of the 82nd Airborne Division brought reflection and quiet, while the presence of the Color Guard and the beautiful singing of the 82nd Chorus provided a dignified setting. Flowers were laid at the plaque of Julian Aaron Cook by Alderman Grete Visser, US Army Attaché COL. Mark Sturgeon on behalf of the US Embassy in The Hague, and BG Llewelyn-Usher on behalf of the 82nd Airborne Division.
Following the official ceremony, a warm gathering took place in the community room, where the 82nd Chorus sang a variety of songs — including requests — together with the residents. A touching conclusion that made the commemoration even more special.
The day showed how past and present intersect: with respect for the sacrifices of earlier generations and with the belief that remembrance connects people. It was a solemn yet warm and hopeful ceremony that Nijmegen can be proud of. And pride is also due to Martine Gaal and the residents of the Aaron building.
